Chickenpox, also known as varicella is an infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus. The infection most often occurs in childhood, without complications and ends by spontaneous recovery. However, serious and life-threatening complications can occur, especially in immunosuppressed individuals. Even if the infection is mild, this neurotropic virus remains in the nerve ganglia and may reactivate in the form of herpes zoster later. Even this clinical manifestation can be accompanied by very unpleasant complications. There is an effective vaccine against chickenpox, which is part of national immunization plans in many countries, but is not widely used in the Czech Republic. So, is it better to let the children suffer from the disease or to be vaccinated? This article summarizes current knowledge about the non/benefits of vaccination.
