Shaken baby syndrome represents a type of abusive head trauma in small children. In this syndrome, an adult care-giver inflicts intracranial trauma in a child with vigorous movements and shaking of the child's body. These are usually performed in an attempt to appease a crying baby. As a consequence, subarachnoid/subdural bleeding, brain contusion, axonal injury and bilateral retinal bleeding may all develop. The syndrome may cause acute death, long-term neurologic morbidity or late mortality. Primary prevention consists of education of young adults and adolescents in knowledge of developmentally normal behaviour of children, coping with emotional...

Several hundred children are physically abused annualy in the Czech Republic. Young age is the most important risk factor. Physical abuse can manifest in numerous ways. Some findings have high specificity for abuse, especially when present in infants. The radiology findings with high specificity for abuse include classic metaphyseal lesions, rib fractures and duodenal trauma. Investigating abused children is difficult because the history tends to be unreliable, children present to hospital after a significant time delay, and the children cannot provide a history themselves due to young age. Moreover, the children often show no visible signs of trauma...

Online challenges are a phenomenon that existed before the advent of the Internet and has developed massively, mainly through Internet-based services that allow the sharing of large amounts of information (mainly audiovisual content) among other users. Online challenges can be positively targeted, for example, to different types of campaigns to support information, research and development of treatment methods for a specific diagnosis (typically the Ice Bucket Challenge). However, a large number of challenges can cause serious physical or psychological harm to people (often children) involved. Examples include the Choking Challenge, the Salt and Ice...

High temperatures applied directly on the skin surface for a sufficient amount of time cause thermal burns. Similar damage in skin can be induced by ionising and solar irradiation. Protective measures could prevent both of them. Contact with high temperature for a long period of time provokes livedo (erythema ab igne). Low or freezing temperatures cause frostbites. Exposition to lower temperatures for a long period of time induces perniones.

Child abuse and neglect syndrome is a serious social problem which greatly affects health and long-term development of an individual. The physical form of child abuse and neglect syndrome with the highest mortality is the so-called shaken baby syndrome (SBS). It is a form of inflicted head trauma in small children caused by violent shaking, blunt impact or by combination of both of these mechanisms. Nonspecific symptoms often in combination with incomplete or vague history and social controversy are causes of insufficient evidence of the cases. Reported incidence is very likely underestimated and we can speak of the tip of the iceberg of all the cases...

Primary hypomagnesia with secondary hypocalcemia is a rare genetic disorder that appears in early infancy. The cause of this disease is an impaired intestinal absorption of magnesium leading to its low serum level accompanied by hypocalcemia. Typical signs at initial manifestation are generalized seizures, tetany and/or muscle spasms. The prognosis of the disease depends on rapidity and accuracy of the diagnosis.
