Bolest břicha, akutní nebo chronická, patří mezi časté a běžné potíže u dětí. Ačkoli patofyziologie tvorby a vnímavosti bolesti je dnes již lépe objasněna, abdominální potíže (dyskomfort) zůstávají i nadále souhrnem často nespecifických příznaků. Nicméně u malého počtu dětí bolest bříška reprezentuje důležitý ukazatel nemoci. I když převážná většina dětí s akutní bolestí břicha je primárně vyšetřována pediatrem, chirurgicky řešitelné příčiny bolesti břicha vyžadují okamžitou diagnózu a intervenci s neodmyslitelným přispěním chirurga. Tři nejčastější chirurgické naléhavé případy u dětí s akutní bolestí břicha jsou inkarcerovaná inguinální hernie, invaginace a akutní apendicitida. Heterogenní povaha akutní bolesti břicha u dětí může často způsobit diagnostické potíže. Extraabdominální příčiny akutní bolesti břicha jsou v dětském věku velmi časté, z nich infekce horních a dolních cest dýchacích (bronchitidy, astma, pneumonie) tvoří až 64 % ze všech netraumatických akutních bolestí břicha dětského věku.
