Úrazy jsou v zemích evropského regionu hlavní příčinou smrti v populaci ve věku od 1 do 42 let. Střízlivé odhady uvádějí náklady vynaložené na úrazy dětí v ČR na 10 miliard korun ročně. U 8,4 % dětí postižených úrazem ve věku 6–15 let jsou udávány dlouhodobé, nebo dokonce trvalé následky.

Pohled na úraz se ve světě v druhé polovině 20. století změnil – z fatální souhry okolností na děj, který je výsledkem prostředí, schopností jedince a vlastností činitele, který poškození organizmu vyvolá. Tento nový pohled na úrazy jako na nemoc umožňuje jejich prevenci.
