Pyogenic spondylitis as a cause of back pain

The authors describe a 16-year-old boy with a ten-week history of spinal pain who was admitted to hospital for severe blockade of the

thoracolumbar junction and marked paravertebral spasm accompanied by fever. An MRI scan of the thoracolumbar spine revealed

spondylitis at the level of the L1 and L2 vertebrae. Microbiological examination (haemoculture) confirmed Staphylococcus aureus as the

cause of the infection; it was well sensitive to selected the long-term antibiotic treatment.
